Endangered and Discovered Species

The 100 most endangered species on the planet includes (just?) two in Indonesia.

- Javan rhino (possibly "as high as 47" individuals left) Ujung Kulon National Park, Java, Indonesia
Threat: hunting for traditional medicine and small population size

- Common batagur, four-toed terrapin
Threat: illegal export and trade from Indonesia to China

Newly discovered species

- Paucidentomys vermidax) is a rat discovered in the upland forests of Sulawesi: it doesn't have any molars for grinding food, but just four incisors. Of the two caught by researchers, one had a stomach full of worm segments and nothing else. Hence the name: paucidentomys translates roughly as 'few-toothed mouse,' while vermidax means 'worm devourer'.

- A new species of giant, venomous wasp has also been found on the island of Sulawesi. The two-inch-long (5cm) black insects are shrouded in mystery - all of the wasp specimens caught so far have been dead.

This is a list of Critically Endangered, Endangered, or Vulnerable species in Indonesia as of 2004.
